![]() | [dir=ltr] Some languages are "phonetic". That means that you can look at a word and know how to say it. English is not phonetic. You cannot always look at an English word and know how to say it. You cannot always hear an English word and know how to spell it. George Bernard Shaw (GBS) was a famous Irish writer. He asked the following question as an example: How do we pronounce the word "ghoti"? His answer was "fish". How can "ghoti" and "fish" sound the same? GBS explained it like this: * the gh = f as in rouGH * the o = i as in wOmen * the ti = sh as in naTIon Of course, this was a joke. The word "ghoti" is not even a real word. But it showed the inconsistency of English spelling. It is very important to understand that English spelling and English pronunciation are not always the same. [/dir] |

I missed everything especially the daily routine of my life. Now I'm back to my place, my world like I'm used to and I'm full of energy and willing to do so much things. Sorry for not posting anything! [/dir] |

![]() | [dir=ltr] Do you read poetry ? Either English or Arabic ? ( btw*, are english and arabic supposed to be capatalized ? ) I love poetry and love analyzing it. I spent a lot of time with english poems, studying and analyzing them. Though it was school work, I enjoyed it very much. This is a poem I read few days ago, it's very nice and meaningful. See if you can understand what the poet tried to say. The tide rises, the tide falls, The twilight darkens, the curlew calls; Along the sea-sands damp and brown The traveler hastens toward the town, And the tide rises, the tide falls. Darkness settles on roofs and walls, But the sea, the sea in darkness calls; The little waves, with their soft, white hands Efface the footprints in the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls. The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveler to the shore. And the tide rises, the tide falls. Have fun ! * btw = by the way [/dir] |

![]() | [dir=ltr] Arabic poetry is amazingly beautiful, I enjoy reading it. I find it much 'poetry-like' because of the rhythm and parallel lines. The rhyming is very fascinating as well. English poetry tends to be more simpler no need for rhyming and as long as there is some sort of rhythm then it is considered a poem. Also the simplicity of writing a poem is different in both languages. Arabic poetry is not easy to write unless you have the magic wands poets do. It is not easy to think of the best word that fits in a line, and convey feelings freely in a fit space. Thus it is more magical/pleasing than English. But what can I say, I like English poetry too. Thanks 'The knight' for passing by, I'm very pleased ! [/dir] | |
