Smile Idioms

[dir=ltr]

Idioms are expressions that are used in a language. They usually have special meanings that aren't represented by the literal meaning of the words they consist of.

Idioms can be considered sometimes a superficial touch on your language, but they make your language sound more "natural" and more native-like. Idioms can also make your talking a lot more easier. It takes one idiom to say it all sometimes!

Would you like us to learn some of them together?

Thank you for joining me in our trip!
Hopefully, we'll start together as soon as the forum is back to normal on Saturday.
Thanks again.

For those of you who might not know what idioms are, to make things clearer, here are some idioms that are widely used in English:

It's a piece of cake. I'll convince him in no time.

Sami broke his wife's heart again!

We'll learn a lot of them, inshAllah.

Idioms are useful expressions and very percise. They could mean nothing
for one who doesn't know, because they have a meaning that is different
from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. Thanks for giving us
the chance to review them, we do appreciate

You got it right, sister. This complexity, if I may say, is the secret of its magical touch on one's language. It used to be only available in spoken form. Now, books and dictionaries are out to help learners be good at it given its importance for better chances of communication to happen.

Thank you for being around, sister. It's a pleasure

Nice topic sister

I heard today an idiom which I didn't think for once that I may hear it in English

The straw that broke the camel's back

القشة التي قصمت ظهر البعير

After I heard it, I googled it and found it originally came from Arabic as I thought

I'm really sorry, everyone! I don't know how it slipped my mind to add what I prepared today. I am really sorry. I promise it won't happen again, inshAllah.

**slipped my mind is an idiom used when you want to say you forgot about something.

How about we learn some idioms that use "heads"?

ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Were they clear enough?
Can you write a short story or conversation using them? or just a sentence if you want

Note:
I don't have a predetermined structure in mind for our lessons. It just goes as it suits everyone. Today we tried youtube. If it didn't work, we'll try something else.
Just please let me know what comforts you the most.

You would be surprised to now, then, that a lot of words / expressions in English are actually borrowed from Arabic, others from French. It is one of the characteristics of almost all languages.

For example, the word "sugar" orginates from the Arabic word: سكر. Alcohol, as well, is borrowed from Arabic.

On the other hand, you have words in Modern Arabic that are borrowed from English. Examples of this are: كوباية from cup, computer and so on.

Interesting, ha?

Glad to have you around
Thank you for joining us.
