ok, interesting...

i'm gonna dig out some idioms from my memory, so correct me when i'm mistaken with no mercy, lol

1- Turn the lemons into lemonade
or
when live gives/hands you lemons, make lemonade

أعتقد هذا المثل أيضا موجود في العربية
"إصنع من الليمون عصيراً"
أي تصنع من المشكلة حل (تفاؤل)

2- To know the in's and out's of something.

Someone who knows the in's and out's of something, that means he/she knows everything about it - expert.
e.g : I know the in's and out's of my car i can fix it whenever it's broken down.

3- Watch your p's and q's

It's said for someone who's being rude, to tell them to stop using inappropriate language.


4- Fair and square

it's obvious, does need to be explained?
it usually describes something really fair
for example : if two teams with the same potentials and skills were to play a match, the match would be fair and square!

5- Put the finishing touches on something

موجود أيضاً في اللغة العربية معناه : يضع اللمسات الأخيرة

6- Flesh and Blood

If 2 people are like flesh and blood, they have really close relationship.

7- Tie the knot.

Another way to say Get married

....

Salt of the earth

It can be used as an adjective to describe someone who is worthy and noble

Ex: Mrs. Jamila is the salt of the earth. She is the first to help anyone in trouble

If something is under the table, it’s done secretly, because it is either illegal or unethical
Ex: A lot of these people work 80-hour weeks with all or half of their salaries paid under the table

When you put the cards on the table, you are being honest and straightforward about an issue
Ex: It’s time we put our cards on the table and speak honestly

sit on the fence

When you sit on the fence, you try not to support either side in a dispute or an issue. You are neutral

Ex: If your friends argue, it is best to sit on the fence and not make any one of them angry.

in a jiffy

an informal expression used to mean: immediately, in a moment.
EX: Wait for me; I'll be back in a jiffy.

Put your finger on something

When you put your finger on something, you understand the origin or the cause of it. You don't have to really put your finger on it.

Ex: I know there's something wrong, but I can't put my finger on exactly what it is.

A Slap on the Wrist

A very mild punishment. When the punishment turns out to be less than was expected, it is considered a slap on the wrist.


Ex: He should be in jail for what he did, but he got off with just a slap on the wrist.

Avoid like the plague

When you avoid something or someone like the plague, you consider it dangerous/harmful and you try your best not to be close to it in all ways possible.


Ex: She avoids that driver like the plague. I don't understand why she hates him that much.

Do somebody proud

It has two meanings. When you do someone proud, you do something well that makes them proud of you and pleased. Also, it can me that you treated a visitor or guest very well.


Ex: Bill's kids sure did him proud at the boat race.
Ex: Rosemary did us proud with such a lovely lunch.

Turn a blind eye to

When you turn a blind eye to someone, you deliberately overlook a fault in that person.

Ex: The old man adored his grandson and always turned a blind eye to his misbehavior.
