( 29 ) The next time you are overjoyed or distressed due to a financial gain or loss, remember the statement of Muhammad ibn Suqah: "There are two characteristics which, even though Allah does not punish us for them, are reason enough to be punished: we are overjoyed at a small gain that we receive from this world, yet Allah has never seen us as happy for a good deed that we do; and we are so worried about a small matter that has missed us in this world, yet Allah has never seen us as worried about a sin that we commit." |

A true believer should be "above" this world. He should avoid spending all of his time just for the sake of this worldly life. Malik ibn Dinar once said, "Whoever proposes to this world, it will seek from him his entire religion as its dower, and it will not be pleased with anything other than that." |

( 32 ) It is Sunnah to keep one's feet together (heels touching) while prostrating in prayer: Aa'ishah said: I noticed that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was not there and he had been with me in my bed. I found him prostrating, with his heels together, his toes turned towards the qiblah, saying, "I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and in You from You; I praise you (and I cannot praise You enough." (al-Haakim: saheeh according to conditions of Bukhari & Muslim |

( 35 ) Righteous friends are one of the greatest means by which a Muslim can remain steadfast in his religion. It was narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The believers are like a structure, each part supporting the other." (al-Bukhari, Muslim) And 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "You should seek sincere brothers, for they are an adornment at times of ease and a support at times of calamity." So strive to form such friendships. |

(36) Refraining from speaking the truth on the basis of respect & kindness is not the modesty that is approved of in Islam, rather it is weakness, partaking in sin & neglecting the truth. The Prophet was shyer than a virgin in her chamber, but despite that he would become angry for the sake of Allah if His sacred limits were transgressed. "Whoever pleases people by angering Allah, Allah will entrust him to the people." The wise man tries to find the best way to convey the message of truth without being rough or putting people off. |

"Two hungry wolves do not do more damage to a flock of sheep than a man's eagerness for wealth and status do to his religious commitment." Saheeh al-Tirmidhi. The Prophet likened the harm to a Muslim's religious commitment caused by greed for wealth & status to the damage caused by two hungry wolves who enter the sheep pen and attack the flock, because the one who is greedy for wealth & status wastes his time and may commit haram actions in his efforts, then when he achieves his goal he may not do what is then required of him. |

( 41 ) Allah's forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Allah has obligated five prayers. Whoever perfects their ablution, prays them in their proper times, completes their bows & prostrations, in serene consciousness of Allah & fear of Him, has a promise from Allah that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no promise from Allah. He may [either forgive him or punish him." [Ahmad, Abu Dawood and others; authenticated by al-Albani |

( 42 ) Mother of the Poor was a nickname given to 3 of the Prophet's wives because they did many kindnesses. Zaynab bint Jahsh, the first of his wives to join him after his death; Zaynab bint Khuzaymah al-Hilaliyyah, who died during his lifetime; al-'Aaliyah bint Zubyaan al-Kilaabiyyah. Al-Isaabah 8/16 |

"Repel (evil) with that which is better, then verily he, between whom & you there was enmity, (will be) as though he was a close friend" [41:34]. Mu'awiyah said: I would meet a man during days before Islam & he would insult me badly, but I would show great patience & by the time I left he would be my friend; if I sought help he would help me. Patience only increases-never decreases- a man in honor. A man does not reach the level of wisdom until his patience prevails over his haste & his restraint over his desire. |

( 45 ) Don't fall into the trap: Ads luring people with luxuries & offering purchase by instalments have become common. Some love to live beyond their means and become slaves to debt, which makes them lose sleep in this life and will detain them from the noble position that Allah has prepared for them in the Hereafter. Solution: being thrifty and content with what you have; not borrowing as much as possible. If you do borrow, then resolve to pay it off quickly, and say: O Allah, pay off our debts and make us independent of means. |
