Dear members, this club aims in teaching English functions in an easy way. So, members are welcomed to post their contribution to such field. Furthermore, any function language lesson should be presented with examples and exercises. Replies should only posted after the lesson has been finished and the writer of that function must be there for answering the questions. Functions such as Greetings, Apology, Warning, Advice….etc, would be a great start and there are hundreds of functions in English! Please enlighten us.

Anna and Virginia are good friends and neighbors. They are in Anna's apartment studying hard for an ESL exam. Virginia is concentrating on her textbook.
Anna: Could I look at your notes from January 12th?m
Virginia: What?m
Anna: Could I look at your notes from January 12th?m
Virginia: Oh, sure. Here they are.

Scene 2: Anna is helping her boss, John, prepare for a business trip. John is alone in his office when Anna walks in.
Anna: Here are your tickets, John. And this is your schedule.
John: When is my meeting with Frank Johnson?m
Ana: Sorry?m
John: When do I meet with Frank?m
Ana: Your meeting with Frank is on Tuesday at 10:00, right after your meeting with the Honda people.
John: OK. Thanks.

NOTE: this kind of learning which the teacher asks his student to find the function and discuss it called ACTIVE LEARNING very useful method and it makes the information stick in the students' memory for ever and ever<<<<<<< like driving a car when you learned it by yourself, you will never forget how to use the car even when you stop driving for a long time, correcto m

,then Anna repeated the question

مثلا بالعربي الحين حنا انقول بعض العبارات ومانقولها الى بمواقف معينة مثل :
احمد: الحمدللة على السلامة
ناصر: اللة يسلمك
احمد: كيف حالك شلون الوالدة
ناصر: الحمدللة بخير وعافية تسلم على امك
ناصر: تفضل الهدية جايبها لك من بومبي

Virginia used 'what' to express her suprising becacuse she was concentrating in reading her text book and she didn't expect that Anna will ask to read her notes while they were studying for their exam.

Anna used 'sorry' in the second scene to expess her suprising too because she gave her boss his tickets and schedule and they were prepareing for the trip when he asked about his meeting with Frank. .

This Function called (Asking for repetition)m

Here Virginia asks her friend to repeat what have she said, because she wasn't paying any attention to her;therefore,she said WHAT in an informal way.m

Ana: Sorry?m

Anna here used the Formal expression of this function, and she said SORRY to her boss cause she didn't hear what he has said.m
